You look fine, and anyway, what you say is so important, I did not notice the lighting. I want to ask you something, (I watched your video several times last night, as it's packed with great information). This morning I wake up to Joy Reed being "let go" from MSNBC and I immediately thought of this video? Any comments? Thanks for your great knowledge and insight, much appreciated.
Thank you so much for your kind words and your support. Sometimes when I film these I wonder if anyone will watch, so it's lovely to hear you watched it multiple times :)
I heard about the Joy Reid news from you! So I did a little digging. I don't think her fate was ultimately tied to the Trump administration. There is a new head of network, Rebecca K, who is probably looking to make her mark on the network. There is also a general need to reshape their night time line up, as Maddow goes back to once a week, and Wagner stays out in the field as a correspondent. Finally, Reid's contract is up and her rating have been low which meant she was likely to have faced this no matter what. Given that she is being replaced by the weekend crew (who's biggest crime is being boring, and I guess Steele being a former RNC head is questionable) with Psaki taking one of the spots, it doesn't look like a pivot to the right from my perspective, but we will have to wait and see. MSNBC is splitting from NBC as well so they will be looking to differentiate their offering. Thanks for the tip! Good eyes!
Thank you for your take on her firing. I liked her, she spoke unfiltered, which made me wonder if she would survive the trump era. Your take adds more complexity and makes sense. One thing I did was do a little scroll thru her facebook page to read what was being said, and oh my goodness, the haters were in full force, they piled on her. Now that is just out and out full on racism that exist on social media. I read some of it and moved on. I ran across someone posting where trump was singling her out too. Which I scrolled past, because I am learning to not go digging into everything he is reported to have said...life is too short. Thanks for responding to me, I am very flattered and very grateful. Oh,and the video you made Dark Gothic MAGA, was my first time hearing you, and glad I found your substack. I have tried sharing that DGM video, it needs to be seen. Thanks again.
Can’t recommend C-Span’s Washington Today show enough. On their app, any podcast app, or YT, 5 days a week, summary about daily politics, with extensive soundclips, not just sound bites. Each episode about 45 minutes.
Also, stopped listening to NPR when the sponsors were being subtly inserted in segments, like mentions of Google Maps. And PBS News got rid of one of the best current interviewers, and went too “scoldy woke” in their reporting. Same with Democracy Now; like great to have new and ignored voices, but stop telling me how to feel about facts.
Keep up the good work and thanks for mentioning that writers are devotedly NOT using AI. I am still on the fence about getting a degree in writing, because I have seen redditors talk about how their instructors use AI-detectors and are flat-out rejecting their actual work.
Still on the fence about Substack, especially with the introduction of Notes and the trolling that spike with the eXodus of Twitter. I like that I can read some Substack posts, and then am locked out of the paid subscribers’ feedback loops of praise and outrage. Being off social media now for months (no fb, IG, Twitter or reddit after over a decade or two!) made me realize that contacting my reps through their websites or phone calls, really is more effective than any of my mentions/posts.
This seems like an long comment, but honestly dunno where to have political conversations anymore. It’s like the first Trump term and COVID made it too emotionally charged to meet in a group or have these discussions in public. Have had several experiences where total strangers eavesdrop or start saying insanely antisocial things in the self-checkout of the grocery store. Ma’am, we are struggling with scanners and produce codes, no one needs to hear your offline rant right now.
I am a big fan of C-SPAN. NPR is bound to get worse and worse with Trump threatening to cut their public funding. I find it very interesting how people tend to insert a lot of emotion into their reporting as a response to their panic in order to try and persuade their audiences. I wouldn't have an issue with it if they weren't trying to sell their reporting as objective. Just be clear about what you are doing! It also makes me feel like they don't trust me to have the 'correct' reaction.
If I already had an audience I wouldn't be using substack. I'd be on ghost or beehiv.
And yes, direct political action is ALWAYS better than discussing politics online.
About to go pick up Owned from the library, and just finished Character Limit, which was a fascinating read about Elon’s Twitter takeover, especially considering his current public mistakes with DOGE.
Also reading A Warning by Anonymous and Sarah Kenzdoir’s books, who’s Substack is free for the masses.
Rituals conducted within The Cathedral and the last decade+, as dictated by the priests (reporters, academics), and definitely not by some organic sort of communication:
Also, your Project 2025 video is all over Reddit. It was first posted on r/collapse and took off from there. Your numbers on uToob reflect it. Very well done!
I think that they plan on suing individuals, too. Ai will be launched to scour comment sections for speech that they don't like. Individuals could be sued out of existence. A man in Ohio, I think, was arrested on charges of threatening Leon on Ten, formerly Twitter. The warrant was issued from Texas. Awful times.
In a very short time from alt national parks service, to finding your dgm story, to the r/50501 movement posting references uncourageously to said story may be a part of the fragmentation now yes but finding solace in your perspective makes subscribers fact check for their sanity. You make going down the rabbit hole seem more like an informed decision in a world where it is increasingly evident that there are four sides to every story.

Now jam that through a truth model as a means to monitor the masses and these universally concocted theologian, Emile based models are not all that new. Been around since oligarchy itself.
Perception is 9/10 of the truth/law whatever that is now.
Was late when I posted; To postulate where I was going with all this is these billionaire pseudo psych-semantic Re-programmers will use the inherent communication model built into all of us and blur the line between good evil and ignorant informed, let it all play out then live out their fucked up version of Atlas Shrugged drawing blood from the masses. One thing that is universally true however, and cannot be skewed, is that everything man made will fall.
Omg! I got to the end of this and was so happy to hear your take on Substack. Especially your points about the cost of trying to get more than one reporter’s opinion - whoops, did I say that?- I mean take on issues, no editors and no exposure to various lenses from which to get the news. And regarding Taibbi, Weiss and Greenwald…you are spot on. I subscribe to Taibbi to keep a finger on the pulse of this “alt left”. Having read him since his Rolling Stone days, I can’t agree with you more on his apparent change in viewpoints on so much. His scathing coverage of Biden and the Dems with no similar examination of Trump was crazy. Now I feel he is missing out on the biggest story of his lifetime! If he would focus a bit of his talent and wit on the Trump shit show happening today, it would indeed be a treat for all. I suspect though, he realizes he’d lose a huge proportion of his readers. Anyhow, I have been reading and subscribing to Substack for several years and have come to the same conclusions you outline here about it vs traditional/mainstream media. I very much enjoy your clear reporting and your humor!
I really, really think you would enjoy the Eoin Higgins book I have linked above. The audiobook is also on spotify if you have a subscription there. He does interviews with Taibbi and traces the moneyyyy and I just think you would really get a lot out of it. Very interesting read.
out of curiosity, why not switch to YouTube then? it's still independent media, but it's not controlled by mark andressen/clearer that most of the money is coming from advertising even for people who use youtube memberships
Hey fair question! I said in a response further up that once I grow my community I have every intention of moving to ghost. Ghost is open source. Unfortunately not being a big deal limits me a little bit in that I need to be discoverable. I intend to use substack for news reporting, because I like the diversity of features and the newsletter style, and put larger investigative pieces on YouTube. YouTube doesn’t have Marc but it does have his good friend Larry Page at the helm! I am trying to move away from google in a general sense also. To be clear, andreessen doesn’t pay me. Money comes from subscribers and substack takes a percentage. The issue for me is less to do with funding and more to do with privacy and control. I am just as likely to be shut down on YouTube as I am on Substack
Hey Joanna! You're my first person I've ever subscribed to on here. I love how personable and detailed you are in explanation/connecting-the-dots. These are insane times and you really help bring clarity when obfuscation is the M.O. for this administration. It also helps that your voice is like ASMR level of coolness. Keep up the great work! (It also helps that you are incredibly smart -- you know English, Russian, French, and Arabic!?! Also you are incredibly beautiful, just sayin) Glad to be here from NC!
Hi Joanna. sooo. I have been doing some research on Theil, Srinivasan, and the TechBros and someone sent me your video on silicon valley's agenda. "Dark Gothic Maga." anyway, loved it. using info from my research and inspired by your video, I made a new "dummied down" version that I plan to post soon. Was going to give you some inspiration and source credit if that's cool. just a simple footnote in the intro screen and some tags once I share. would you like to see it before hand and let me know if that's cool? don't want to drop your name if you hate it.
Thank you as always for breaking things down in such an easily digestible manner. I’ve shared your videos with so many friends, it’s been a great way to introduce these concepts to my friends in ways they can understand. Added bonus, as an Aussie living in the USA, you remind me so much of one of my best mates back home which is very comforting!
I'm not really sure what I was trying to achieve with the lighting on this one. I guess I was trying to look "not sick".

Ok, yes, shutting up now.

Well said. When NPR axed Talk of the Nation, it was a slide down the crapper.
Thank you, Joanna. So logical and no nonsense. You are brilliant!

I will have a look at the substack! Thanks for the tip.
After watching this video I became a first time subscriber for any Substack. It's that good! Thank you.
That is such a lovely thing to say! Thank you so much for your support, it really means a lot <3

This made me laugh.
Least I can do with what you've been providing us readers/watchers. We're lucky to have your work.
I joined Substack for you. As someone working in a news organization ... sooner needs to come real soon!
Solidarity with you! Very tough time to be in the news business but it is needed now more than ever <3
